Buying your first home is one of life’s milestones. Everyone’s stories and experiences are different, which is why we’re sharing how our team members bought their first home, and what they learnt along the way.
Jorja Woodward — Lending Assistant
My husband and I (then partner) bought our first home in 2003, in Paraparaumu. It had two bedrooms and a single garage—it was great!
We saved hard for months to get a 5% deposit—which was $9,950! The house was a standard listing, and we secured it through negotiation. Once we purchased the house we moved in with another couple that were saving for their OE, this helped with the mortgage.
We were lucky the house was only five years old at the time and had been used as holiday home, so it was in great condition. We made the conscious decision to have a smaller new house, compared to a bigger home that needed work, in order to stay within our budget.
What is one lesson you would tell your younger self (if you could!) about buying your first home?
